European Designer, American style. John Callanan originally from Cork City Ireland, had the privilege of studying with one of America's legendary milliners, Anne Albrizio at The Fashion Institute NYC. He would like to also acknowledge his mentor Martin Izquierdo, who suggested that he study hat making and to Douglas Highsmith for supporting the brand for the past 24 years. Callanan hats are distributed by Dorfman Pacific Hat Company.

WINGED THINGS
This was a definite winged themed weekend for me. We had seen Part 1 "The Millennium Approaches" of Angles in America last November and finally got to see part 2 Perestroika on Friday night at SIGNATURE THEATER COMPANY. Set in the winter of 1986, it is still as poignant today, 25 years later. Part 2 is nearly 4 hours but it is so intense, so consuming, that it is over before you realize it. All the actors are outstanding, so it would be unfair to pick 1 out from the cast. Nevertheless, the angle's appearance never fails to startle the audience. The Divine light at her appearance, being so intense I was forced to look away. The angle Bethesda, whose appearance in the second temple, caused a miracle causing spring to bubble where her foot alighted. The play finale is set at the Bethesda fountain in central Park.
Last night we went to see BLACK SWAN, a bird of a different feather. A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, BLACK SWAN stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a ballet dancer who wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan, but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like the evil twin sister of the White Swan, the Black Swan. Psychologically abused by her mother and choreographer she takes on a dual personality. The audience cannot make out what is real and what is imagined in Nina's warped world. I had to cover my eyes a few times as it is quite gory and scary. great acting but not everyone cup of tea. Should get some nominations however.

ATS JANUARY 2011
We had an amazing http://www.accessoriestheshow.com/ this week. It was one of the best attended shows in a long time. The reality is apparel is slow, unlike high margin accessories, so stores are expanding their accessory departments, and after last year's never-ending-summer, stores had very little carry over in hats. Buyers just see the glam but they have no idea what we do to create the fantasy of an exhibit.
Got to the booth on Saturday at 9.30. Our booth is situated right in front of the freight exit with a gale blowing in from Canada, so it was like being in a deep-freeze locker -10. Yep, wore the long johns, hoodie and fingerless gloves but was still like a block of ice. YEA, I GOT ME A REAL GLAMOROUS JOB.
Booth was nearly set up. We use http://www.mannystone.com/, the best in the business but we had to wait 1 hour until the union guys put the light up.
No, I do not have a magic wand and the hats just appear on the walls. We have to unwrap the hats that arrive from out distro in Stockton Ca. thanks to Christine Topete and her hard working team. 
We merchandise the hats by brands and we happen to have the best hat brands in AMERICA. Iconic brands like STETSON, TOMMY BAHAMA, CARLOS SANTANA 
as well as CALLANAN, SCALA AND CAPPELLI STRAW WORLD
With the help of Leslie Corea, a merchandise whiz, Jim Caparosa and Ann Breland we do our magic.
5 hours later, feeling like blocks of ice we are ready for our close up.

SALE, sale, SALE, sale
SALE, there was a time when a SALE SIGN really meant something. When it meant you were really getting a bargain. People waited for the January white sales in the hope of getting something that was ordinarily out of their budget. In Paris, stores are only allowed to go on sale certain times of the year. In America it seems that a NON SALE store is an endangered species. I had to go see a prestigious Fifth Avenue store today, that wanted to buy Callanan spring hats. The store is not too far from our showroom so I decided to walk in the snow. I was struck by all the SALE signs and wondered what were they telling me about what was on sale. Here are some observations.
@juicycouture the sign looked a little like Las Vegas. The odds are with the house. Maybe I will not win a bargain.
2 doors in from Fifth was a little too on the down low for me. 
@faconnable a devision of Nordstrom. Nice clean white classic sign that I can trust. I will get a good deal here. 
never trust a NYC store with a going out of business............even if they are.
H&M is so cheap to begin with, why would you even bother looking for a bargain. Tacky looking sale sign.

@colehann. This says we have a solid sale and we still merchandise the sales goods. We are proud of our goods and image even when on sale.

Thousands of LEDs brighten Madison Square Garden this winter « Art's in the Right Place
Thousands of LEDs brighten Madison Square Garden this winter « Art's in the Right Place: I think that tonight would be great night to to Madison Square Garden can enjoy Scattered Light – a series of three public artworks by the new media artist Jim Campbell in the snow. Each piece is inspired by cities and their inhabitants. I strolled in the park last night on my home from a 2 1/2 hours yoga class with my teacher Carrie Owerko. Still on a high from class the Scattered Light instillation was extra magical.
The largest – also named Scattered Light – makes use of a kind of matrix measuring 80′h x 20′w x 16′d to hold nearly 2000 household lightbulbs containing LEDs.
When viewed head-on the LEDs, programmed to flicker scattered light, then create the impression of enormous human shadows passing through the structure. Moving round the installation distorts the effect and the human becomes abstract. You can see what I mean in the video above and the second part of one of the videos below.
Broken Window, the second installation, features an array of LEDs encased in a glass-brick wall (70″h x 70″w x 10″d) and shows blurry videos of people within a city environment across the glass plane. Their movements are intended to reflect the movement in Scattered Light.
The third is Voices in the Subway Station. Again, it features LEDs but this time they’re encased in 24 glass tablets measuring 14″ x 18″ each and spread across the lawn at ground level. The rhythm of light pulsing from each tablet is dictated by a recording of the voices of individual travelers in conversation on a subway platform. It’s the only part of the work which does not have a figurative element and sounds like it has a lot in common with some of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer‘s recent work."

Callanan trapper hat for winter 2011
Cathy Horyn and Eris Wilson did get a few things right regarding 10 looks we never want to see again www.nytimes.com/slideshow like cupcake breasts and denim diapers but she is totally wrong regarding trapper hats.
The trapper hats totally works with the work-ware, utilitarian look that continues to be a staple in hipster locals like Williamsburg. The cover of the John Callanan Legacy catalog fall 2011 features an Aran knit trapper, lines with faux fur. Although not yet available, it has been a hit with anyone who has seen it.
It look as sexy on Brain as it does on angelic Erin.

yoga for hangovers.
At midnight , with glass in hand, I will turn over a new picture on the wall calendar and tomorrow I will write the wrong date on my rent check.

new traditions from callananhats
A few years ago I decided to delist the Turkey dinner from my Christmas tradition. This childhood, over-indulgent dinner just left me feeling bloated and piggy. So I decided that caviar would be my new Christmas day tradition served somewhere between 1 and 3. Luck for me my brother works in Azerbaijani and so I get caviar as a gift each year. So of the way we have enjoyed this tradition is
A LA COQ
A LA RUSSE. The shells were pick up on the beach in Cape Town last December and made great vodka shot glasses.
A LA POLANAISE
A LA THIERRY. with poached eggs.
This year I decided to give my caviar brunch an American twist. Thanks to a wonderful recipe from Anne Rosenzweig circa 1985 which was reprinted in the new York Magazine Aug. 29, 2010.
A LA AMERICAN.
There corncakes with caviar are so delicious that I want to share the recipe, so here we g.
PULSE 2 CUPS OF FROZEN CORN KERNELS IN A FOOD PROCESSOR WITH 2 TBLS OF MILK TO A FINE TEXTURE.
ADD TO BOWL AND ADD 1/3 CUP OF MILK, FLOUR, CORN MEAL, AND 1/ CUP OF MELTED BUTTER. BLEND WELL. ADD 2 EGGS,1 YOLK, 3 TBLS CHOPPED CHIVES. SALT AND PEPPER TO TASTE.
USE A NONSTICK SKILLET WITH A LITTLE BUTTER AND ADD 1 1/2 TBLS OF MIX AT A TIME TO MAKE LITTLE PANCAKES.
FLIP AFTER ABOUT 1 1/2 MINUTES.
I GOT 19 GOLDEN DELICIOUS PANCAKES FROM THE MIX. SERVED THEM NEXT TO STORE BOUGHT BLINIS. GUESTS DEVOURED THE CORNCAKES AND ONLY TASTED THE BLINIS WHEN THE CORNCAKES WERE GONE.
